Can a provider bill for critical care in the morning and then later in the day bill for a discharge summary after doing the death pronouncement?

Hello mhafford,

This can be tricky even for an experienced coder. I want to share my favorite spot that can help clarify an answer to your question.

Critical care can be billed as long as time is documented appropriately when it is on the same day and not continuous. Bear in mind the documentation must meet the definition for critical care. If later in the day, the provider only does a death pronouncement, then the provider cannot bill that time as critical care because the patient did not need critical care because the patient is dead.

Hope this help you.
